AI Entertainment is eying up a November release for the sleeper croc hit Black Water.
The low budget horror flick has taken over $112,000 at the local box office, despite having only screened at regional locations. Black Water has also been sold to over 75 countries, making it one of the most successful homegrown features of the last year.
Kim Berwick, Film Sales and Acquisitions Manager at AI, says a DVD release date for the film is still to be finalized. “We are looking at a possible November DVD release, but we are just waiting to see how many nominations the film will receive for the upcoming AFI Awards.”
Black Water tells the tale of three holidaymakers who are stranded in a mangrove swamp and threatened by a saltwater crocodile. The film was financed by the Australian Film Commission (now Screen Australia) and Territorial Film Developments (UK).
So far the film has been sold to 76 countries and co-director Andrew Traucki has been delighted with the response. “We wanted to make a film with international appeal and obviously we’ve succeeded,” he says. “This latest round of sales caps a remarkable sales ride for a film that was made for $1.2mllion and principally shot within 25 kilometres from the Sydney CBD.”
